Łukasz Urbaniak

composer, music theoretician, and pianist; b. 16th January 1980 in Bydgoszcz. He completed a secondary school in his hometown (1999) and the Artur Rubinstein Secondary School of Music, having studied the piano under Rafał Krokowski (2003). In 2003-08 he studied with Marek Jasiński at the Faculty of Composition, Music Theory and Sound Engineering at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music, graduating with a diploma with honours in composition and theory of music. He also graduated in law from the Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń (2004). In May 2013 he began his PhD research at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw under Paweł Łukaszewski.

In 2008-11 Łukasz Urbaniak taught general music subjects and piano improvisation at the Karol Szymanowski School of Music in Toruń. In 2011 he established the Study of Musical Creativity (Studium Muzycznej Kreatywności) in Bydgoszcz, where he runs courses on improvisation, composition and jazz piano. Since 2011 he has worked as répétiteur of a ballet ensemble and a ballet studio affiliated with Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz.

He has written solo, chamber, and symphony pieces for different line-ups. He has also composed didactic works and music for theatre productions (Skarb, Bydgoskie Pomniki). His works have been performed in Denmark, Germany, the UK, (London Festival of Contemporary Church Music - 2011, 2013), Spain (4th International Organ Festival in Santander - 2009; International Choral Festival Serrania de Cuenca - 2010), Italy (International Festival "Sacra a Roma" - 2011), Lithuania (Christopher Summer Music Festival - 2011) and Poland (8th Łapskie Te Deum - Podlasie Festival of Sacred Music - 2005; Rybnik Choral Autumn - Internationa Festival - 2005; Cantate Domino in Kraków – 2006, 2007, 2010; Polish National Festival of Passion Songs in Bydgoszcz - 2007; 17th Adam Didur Festival in Sanok - 2007; International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" in Częstochowa - 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013; Legnica Cantat - 2009). A few of his works have been recorded on CD and DVD.

His artistic work has earned him many awards and distinctions. These include: 1st prize at the 1st Polish National Composing Competition of Choral Passion Songs (Bydgoszcz, 2004), and honourable mention of the 2nd edition of the competition (2006); 2nd prize (1st was not awarded) at the 15th Adam Didur Polish National Open Composition Competition (Sanok, 2007); 2nd prize at the 3rd Polish National Composing Competition of Choral Passion Songs (Bydgoszcz, 2008); 1st prize at the Polish National Composing Competition of Choral Songs a cappella in the "mixed choirs" category (Legnica, 2008); 1st prize at the same competition in the "male/female choir" category (Legnica, 2008); 2nd prize at the "Fides et Ratio" Polish National Composing Competition (Toruń, 2009); 2nd prize at the Musica Sacra International Composition Competition (Częstochowa, 2009, 2011); 1st prize and honourable mention at the 2nd Polish National Composing Competition of Liturgical Choral Works (Bydgoszcz, 2011); 1st prize, Mayor of Poznań Award and the Composer-in-Residence of the Poznań Chamber Choir Award at the Opus 966 Polish National Composing Competition for A Patre Unigenite (2013). Two of his pieces (Exaltabo te Domine, In te Domine speravi) were selected for presentation at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music (2011, 2013), while his Missa in memoriam Beati Georgii Popiełuszko, commissioned by the Gaude Mater Culture Promotion Centre in Częstochowa and supported with a grant by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (as part of the "Composing Commissions" programme), was performed during the Liturgical Inauguration of the International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" (May 2, 2013).

Lukasz Urbaniak's pieces have entered the repertoire of the Schola Cantorum Gedanensis Polish Chamber Choir (Gdańsk), Jauna Muzika Vilnius Municipal Choir (Vilnius), Astrolabium (Toruń), Musica Viva (Poznań), Octava Ensamble (Kraków), Camerata Silesia (Katowice), Choir of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University (Warsaw), Akolada (Bydgoszcz), Canto (Włocławek), Senza rigore - Choir of the Academy of Music in Wrocław, Poznań Chamber Choir under Bartosz Michałowski. The works have been conducted by Jan Łukaszewski, Vaclovas Augustinas, Maja Metelska, Michał Sławecki, Kinga Litowska, Anna Szostak, Marek Gandecki, Renata Szerafin-Wójtowicz, and Zygmunt Magiera.

Lukasz Urbaniak is an active organiser of cultural events. He founded an artistic and academic Club at the Faculty of Composition, Music Theory and Sound Engineering of theAcademy of Music in Bydgoszcz. He was also the initiator, co-organiser, and juror of the Composing Competition for Secondary Schools of Music In Tribute to Marian Gordiejuk (2007, 2008); co-organiser and active participant of a few interdisciplinary academic sessions (Postmodernism in music and plastic arts - 2006, Resounding images, or meeting musical graphic design - 2007, Sources of inspiration - 2008), and concerts in the series "Con-front-akcje muzyczne" (Music Con-front-actions), "Kontrapunkty - laboratorium młodych" (Counterpoints - Youth Laboratory), "Szkolna Partytura” (A School Score). As of June 2012 he is a member of the Artistic and Programming Council of the International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" in Częstochowa. In 2008 he was awarded a scholarship by the Mayor of Bydgoszcz for his artistic and organisational efforts.
