Łukasz Urbaniak — composer, arranger, music theorist, pianist and teacher.

In his multifaceted artistic work, he combines a thorough academic education with a rich and versatile creative output.

He graduated with honours in composition from the class of Prof. Marek Jasiński, and in music theory, from the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz (2008). He is also a qualified lawyer, having graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (2004).

His rich creative output spans a wide range of musical forms: from solo and chamber works, through symphonic compositions for varied performing forces, to theatrical and stage music, as well as compositions of an educational character. Choral and sacred music hold a special place in his output — he is, among other things, the author of Missa in honorem Sancti Adalberti, the first Polish mass in history composed in honour of St. Adalbert (St. Wojciech).

Work and International Reach

Łukasz Urbaniak’s compositions have been performed in more than a dozen countries (including the USA, the United Kingdom, China, France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Denmark), as well as in Poland’s most prestigious concert halls, such as the National Philharmonic and Opera Nova. His works are regularly featured in the programme of the prestigious London Festival of Contemporary Church Music.

His works have been performed by renowned Polish and international ensembles (including Sansara, the National Philharmonic Choir, the Polish Chamber Choir, and Camerata Silesia) under the baton of outstanding conductors.

Awards and Honours

He is the winner of several dozen composition competitions (including Opus 966, Musica Sacra, and the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award in Switzerland).

  • Fryderyk 2017: Award for the album De profundis (NFM Choir, conducted by A. Franków-Żelazny), featuring his composition.

  • Fryderyk nominations: For the albums Prayer (2013) and Martyrum Polonorum (2015).

  • Honours: The Meritorious for Polish Culture medal (2015) and the Scholarship of the Mayor of Bydgoszcz.

Commissions and Publications

He has composed numerous works commissioned by cultural institutions and ensembles as part of the Institute of Music and Dance’s Collections: Composer Commissions programme (including Missa in memoriam Beati Georgio Popiełuszko, released by DUX, and Missa in honorem Sancti Adalberti). His works are published by the Polish Music Publishing House (PWM) and leading record labels.

Teaching and Organisational Activities

  • Lecturer in composition at the F. Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.

  • Founder, manager and teacher at the Studium Muzycznej Kreatywności (Studio of Musical Creativity).

  • Répétiteur for the Ensemble and Ballet School at Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz.

  • Juror and initiator of artistic events (including the M. Gordiejuk Memorial Competition), and former member of the Artistic and Programme Council of the Gaude Mater Festival.

  • Educator and arranger in nationwide musical projects (e.g. Most the Music, the Karuzela gna project).
